Is your sidewalk naked? Does your home need a little shade? Are you interested in improving air and water quality? Would you like to join your neighbors in beautifying Black Rock and maintaining our urban forest?
The Black Rock Garden Club is distributing trees in the neighborhood for as little as $45 each. The trees are for planting in the “tree space” along streets. On properties with sidewalks, that’s the space between the sidewalk and the street. On properties without sidewalks, it’s within the city easements, generally 5-10” from the curb.
How it works:
1. A member of the Garden Club will visit you at home to determine if a tree is appropriate for your location.
2. If a tree is appropriate, you will sign a contract with the Garden club indicating:
• your commitment to water the tree twice weekly
• the type of tree you would like
• whether or not you are able to help plan the tree
• amount you will contribute to offset cost of trees
3. The City of Bridgeport will dig a hole in the predetermined location.
4. Garden Club members and neighbors will plant your tree in early June.
Fee structure:
The Garden Club will transport trees, subsidize purchase, and plant them in the pre-approved location.
Crabapple (Harvest Gold, Red Jade, Prairie Fire, Zumi) $ 45
Honey Locust $ 55
London Plane $ 75
American Linden $ 85
Princeton Elm 2” $125
Princeton Elm 2.5” $165
Tree Selection:
All trees are Connecticut approved street trees. This means they are hearty in an urban environment, less disruptive to sidewalks and lawns than other species, and need little fall cleanup.
Volunteers Needed:
Please join us as we plant trees throughout the neighborhood. Contact David Berkowitz for more information at 522-4904.
The Black Rock Street Tree Replanting effort is made possible with financial support from the Black Rock Garden Club and the CT Urban Forest Council. The City of Bridgeport has generously agreed to dig holes for planting.
