Bridgeport, Conn. - MAYOR JOHN FABRIZI AND THE DOWNTOWN SPECIAL SERVICES DISTRICT cordially invite you to an interactive workshop focusing on planning for Downtown Bridgeport’s bright future. This workshop is one of a series being conducted as Bridgeport prepares a new, citywide master plan. Bridgeport’s new Master Plan will be the document that the City uses to guide development and land use decisions over the course of the next ten years.
Last year, the Downtown Special Services District (DSSD) convened a large and diverse group of Bridgeport stakeholders to draft "Re-imagining Downtown Bridgeport," a plan for the revitalization and renewal of downtown.
On Thursday, April 12 at 7:30 P.M. at Housatonic Community College, 900 Lafayette Boulevard, the DSSD is presenting a draft of the plan to the public in order to tie the plan into the citywide master plan process. Thursday's meeting will consist of a presentation of the plan and a hands-on, interactive workshop to get feedback from the public.
The plan has four focus areas:
- Downtown After Work envisions downtown as a regional entertainment, shopping and learning destination by linking together existing and new attractions such as the arena and ballpark, Seaside Park, theatres, boutique and large-scale retail, nightlife and a new library.
- Downtown Living recommends a variety of housing options to accommodate a growing and diverse population in downtown along with amenities such as expanded food shopping options and streetscape improvements to make downtown attractive for those seeking an urban lifestyle.
- Downtown Imaging recommends the adoption of a new zoning code for downtown that encourages new buildings to fit into the historic fabric and promotes sustainable green building downtown. It also has specific recommendations to improve the design of public spaces downtown from the People's Bank plaza to the I-95 underpasses.
- Back to Basics recommends a strong focus on the investments that will give the City bang for the buck--realigning intersections to make it easier to get downtown, improving public transit, and making parking less of a hassle. It also recommends turning Lafayette Boulevard into a prime location for corporate office development.
The City expects to incorporate the key recommendations of the downtown plan into its new master plan, which is currently under development.
