The Black Rock Garden Club is pleased to announce the conclusion of its 5th annual tree planting initiative. On Saturday April 24th, the Garden Club, local residents, and the City of Bridgeport combined efforts to plant 11 American Elm Trees along Seaside Avenue and Lake Avenue in Black Rock. Since 2006 the Garden Club has planted more than 35 trees in Black Rock.

At the January 25th Black Rock NRZ meeting, the Black Rock Garden Club revealed plans to create outdoor reading areas in gardens behind the Black Rock Library.  Still in the design stage and in need of funding, the concept consists of ecologically friendly pavers flanked by a bamboo fence to screen off the chain link fence, a Shakespeare garden with boxwood hedges, a Garden Reading Room with golden privet and European hornbeams, and a second Garden Reading Room with emerald green arborvitae hedges.  There will also be hydranga bushes and ot

We would like to invite any of you who are interested in becoming a member of the club. Cost is $10 per person, and if you are not a member, the cost is $10 per person, and a $20 fee for membership to the Club.

Adopt an Elm

Adopt a disease-resistant American Liberty elm tree (from the Elm Research Institute in New Hampshire).  The trees are approximately 6 feet tall, the trunks are approximately 3/4 to 1 inch in diameter.  They are discount priced at $70 each.  You can pick up your tree at 2:30 PM on Saturday, April 18 at the Burroughs Community Center.  To order your tree, call Dave Berkowitz at 552-4904.  Black Rock Garden Club volunteers will show you how to plant your tree and even go to your yard to assist with the planting on April 18.

Black Rock Summit

On Saturday, March 7, two members of each Black Rock community organization were invited to attend a meeting to develop strategies and plans for working together. Our community has become a model for other neighborhoods in the city to emulate because of the deep involvement in civic activities by our residents. The Black Rock Community Council, which was established in 1978, took the lead role in sponsoring the Black Rock Summit and inviting the participants, which included our State Representative Auden Grogins and City Councilperson Sue Brannelly.
